- What environmental or climate challenges do you notice most in your city (for example heat, cold, air quality, or lack of greenery)?
In recent years, Kielce has clearly been feeling the effects of climate change. Summers are becoming hotter, especially in densely built areas where the urban heat island effect is more noticeable. At the same time, we are observing greater seasonal variability, including intense rainfall events that can lead to local flooding. In central areas with a high share of impermeable surfaces, rainwater cannot infiltrate naturally, which increases both heat stress and runoff risks. These combined pressures affect infrastructure, public spaces, and overall environmental quality.
- BLOSSOM aims to test new climate solutions in real neighbourhoods. What local problems should BLOSSOM focus on in Kielce?
In Kielce, BLOSSOM should concentrate on practical solutions that reduce heat stress and improve stormwater management in urban areas. This means expanding green infrastructure, introducing nature-based solutions in public spaces, reducing sealed surfaces, and redesigning central areas to improve thermal comfort. At the same time, it is important that these measures are sustainable not only environmentally but also operationally and financially, so that they can be maintained and replicated in the long term.
- How important are public spaces and green areas for your everyday wellbeing?
Public spaces and green areas are essential for everyday life in Kielce. They provide shade and cooling during hot summer days, improve air quality, and help manage rainwater naturally. In a city facing rising temperatures and more intense rainfall, these spaces are not just aesthetic elements – they are part of the city’s resilience system.
Beyond environmental benefits, green and well-designed public spaces support physical and mental health. They create opportunities for recreation, social interaction, and community engagement. Accessible, comfortable outdoor areas make the city more liveable and inclusive. Strengthening green infrastructure therefore directly improves daily comfort while contributing to long-term climate adaptation.
- Do you feel informed about local climate projects like BLOSSOM and their goals?
We make a clear effort to communicate climate projects such as BLOSSOM in an open and understandable way. Information is shared through official channels, meetings, and cooperation with local stakeholders. At the same time, we are aware that climate projects can be complex, as they combine environmental, technical and financial aspects.
For this reason, continuous communication is very important. We see public awareness and dialogue with residents as a key part of successful climate action. Keeping people informed and involved helps build trust and long-term support for the changes we are implementing.
